Day of Silence 4/25/08
By Buck on Apr 25, 2008 in GLBT
Thank you to everyone who contacted me about this! I wish I had a chance to make a video! I am going to do my best to be as silent as possible the rest of the day.
Please take a moment to check out this organization.
I applaud their wonderful efforts that benefit all of us!
The story of Lawrence King broke my heart! And just when you think it is getting better and its ok to be yourself something like that happens.

The story about Lawrence King actually made my blood run cold. You said it right Buck, just when you think things are getting better…:(

My friend was silent in math class to day. When I asked her about it she gave me slip of paper that explained that she was silent in honor of Lawrence King, who was killed for his sexual orientation. I don’t understand how people could hurt, or even kill someone, for being different.
Love love love,
Courtney

I participated in the DoS. I slipped up once or twice but I recruited a few people. People were very accepting of this in my school. A lot of people did it. One teacher had the audacity to LAUGH at the cause though, ugh.
It shouldn’t even be about tolerating the LBGT community or anyone else different but EMBRACING them as human beings.

My school actually had a really cool take on this–we had an assembly with a presentation and no one in the whole room spoke, but for the rest of the day we were encouraged, instead of being silent, to discuss LBGT issues. I thought it was cool that we recognized the silence but also recognized the need to speak about things like what happened to Lawrence King. I cried during the assembly because the unfairness of it all makes me so mad, though.

I did this last year with a group of friends, and we had a really fun time sharing our experiences afterward and we raised alot of awareness. I would have done it this year too, but I’m homeschooled.

I participated in the day of silence today and wore a sticker that said “I am silent for Lawrence King.” The story of how he died was on Valentine’s Day, he showed his infatuation for his crush through a valentine. When his crush received the valentine from Lawrence King, he got angry and embarassed because he wasn’t gay. The next day after Valentine’s Day, Lawrence King shot and killed him.

I meant to say Lawrence King’s crush shot and killed him.

Thanks for telling us that….but it is a tragic story. Does this all boil down to being gay or not? Were there other factors that may have played a factor? If you know, please tell. Thanks again!

I did stay silent the whole day at school. The one time I wanted to say something was when an ignorant imbecile asked me why I was staying silent for a … “the f-word.” I was unbelievably angry. I couldn’t believe my ears. Those words were so painful to hear. It actually made me feel stronger and another reason to stay quiet the whole day so I can make a difference and to change people’s minds.

Hey Michael, I participated in the Day of Silence.
My friend, Jasmine, came up to me this morning and gave me a green card and I put it on, and stayed quiet because I was serious about this day. Almost all my friends are bi, lesbians, or gay. I feel I should speak out for them while not speaking at all. When my classmates and people in the hallway read my card, they looked at me like a used diaper. I smiled back at them and walked off. It was extremely difficult for me to stay silent, but I did. So many people made rude remarks to me because they can’t accept the fact that people are different. I actually made a difference today, because so many people also wanted to join me and help the cause. But it’s those who opposed the even idea of being different that really almost made me snap.
I can’t wait for the Night of Noise! <3

I really just don’t understand why someone would ever hate a gay person. When I first moved to CT, granted a little sheltered and, admittedly not really knowing anyone who was gay, two people helped me move in. Carrying couches, and boxes. They, though I did not know at the time, were gay. I thought WOW, such nice people. I love this state! For example, when we moved in, we didn’t have any food, so they made dinner for me and my then (but now-ex) girlfriend, after a long day of moving. We became good friends regularly sharing dinner. I am disappointed to hear of someone’s death, but serious strides are being made. Keep up the good work. But stay silent only one of the 365 days, else the loud bullies win!

Be yourself and be proud of it.

I did this for a couple years. It’s much harder than it seems!!!!

I just read about it an hour ago: http://hahnathome.com/?p=771. A blog-friend’s son wore a note to school explaining his silence. Totally worth the read if you get a chance.
Wish I’d known earlier. I’m so out of the loop. Let’s put it on our calendars for next year. Absolutely. Powerful.

This is a really great cause. Buck, do you have any other advice for heterosexuals, like myself, who believe in gay rights and want to be allies? I want to speak out for my GLBT friends but not speak for them.
Straight, but not narrow…
